8 things you should know about farm animals …

1.  In english we usually have a single word that refer to both the male or female of a species. But cows are unique they don’t; we just say cattle, which is plural. That said, in colloquial usage we often just say cows to refer to a herd of cattle. I have got into a lot of trouble from the Happy Farmer (my gorgeous husband) for this error in our early blissful years of marriage (add a wink emoji here)

2.  Sheep have an excellent long term memory. Their memory can extend for up to two years compare this to a goldfish – who has a 3 second memory.
3.  The above fact was a red herring – a goldfish actually has a memory of 3 / 5 months!
4.  Cattle are herd animals but within that they do have a preferred partner /a favorite friend. When they are with random individuals their heart rate is higher than if they are with their mate.

5.  Goats make are great companions for other farm animals, including horses, cows, and chicken

6.  Sheep have an excellent long term memory, they can remember as many as fifty faces (fellow sheep faces!)for up to two years

7.  The largest litter of pigs on record was 37! However the average litter is 12 piglets.

8.  Pigs are good swimmers and prefer water to mud.

Which did you find most interesting ?

For me it was #3.
