1. The Mielie plant has two kinds of roots – brace roots, which grow above the ground and adventitious roots, which spread below ground
2. Maize is used in chewing gum.
3. The ear / cobb is part of the flower of a mielie plant.
4. Each cobb has an even number of rows of mielie pips.
5. The tassle is the “male” part of these plant and the silks (ATTACHED TO THE PIPS) is the “female” part of the plant. See drawing:
