10 quick facts about a dairy cow ….

  1.  Cows are herbivores. (Surprise surprise)
  2. Cows have four stomachs allowing them to utilize parts of the grass plant in milk production that are not palatable otherwise. It takes about two days for a cow to produce milk from grass she ate two days ago.
  3. Cows are social animals and love to be in a herd.
  4. Cows need free access to food and resting areas. They need to rest at least 10 hours a day so that they can ruminate.
  5. Cows were one of the first animals to be domesticated.
  6. Cows can live for up to 20 years but in a commercial environment they are usually culled after 6 years.
  7. Cows are able to conceive at 2 / 3 years old.
  8. 2 months before calving they are “dried off”. Which means they are not milked. After they have calved, the colostrum is given to the calf and then they are sent back into the dairy. The calf then normally gets fed milk replacer. Milk replacer is often cheaper, easier and it has been formulated to help prevent disease. At 8 weeks old they are weaned off the milk.
  9. Calves can stand almost immediately after birth.
  10. The best result is for a cow to fall pregnant again 2 months after calving.
