It is amazing what you learn while shopping …. I was in Woolies the other day and saw this bag “bee aware”. So I did a little research and here are my top eight facts about bees:
- Bees inhabit all continents except Antarctica.
- 99% of a hive is made up of worker bees. All worker bees are female and they do everything in the hive (nudge nudge wink wink …), females are also the only bees that sting ….. (you go girls… a woman scorned ..)Female bees have a life span of around 45 days.
- Drones (male bees) live for up to 90 days or until they mate with the queen bee. Their sole purpose is to mate (nudge nudge …) They do not have the ability to sting.
- Bees communicate with each other by dancing and by releasing various scents.
- A bee has five eyes ….imagine Moms – would be good.
- They can fly up to 25 km / hour.
- They can flap their wings at a rate of 200 flaps / second.
- One bee makes 1/12th of a teaspoon of honey in its lifetime.
