Bang-on-40 … its all about sisterhood
Banging on your steering wheel, banging your head on a brick wall, seldom does any form of banging accompany a positive memory. Banging, for me, has a positive connotation – it is my weekly bang with the marimba girls. Our marimba band (Bang-on-40) has taught me more than just how to bang away to a tune. As Margaret Tudor says in Phillippa Gregory’s novel “Three sisters three queens” “There is only bond that I trust: between a woman and her sisters. We never take our eyes off each other. In love and in rivalry, we always think of each other” It has shown me many profound things, the most important is to be more aware of people and their various issues. All issues are very real to the person who carries them. They have been cultivated and nursed over time, they have their own personality and feelings. I must not just assume all people take life as it comes, they some always have to look, re-look, consider re-consider and then act. I tend to look and act simultaneously.  Rarely is this a good thing …Wanting to get it done and move on. Moving forward is like breathing to me, an essential part of living and of being. Like a shark I have to be moving to live. I do understand the difference between doing nothing and being free. Doing nothing is doing something to me, it is moving to me. I am doing some important introspection and thinking. I am taking care of myself spending some essential me time. Whereas if I am free, I have available time for others. This reminds me of one of my favourite saying: When you ask me what I am doing today and I say “nothing”. It does not mean I am free, it means that I am doing nothing.
Who would have thought that at the tender age of 40-odd I would be a band chick. That I would be able to tick that off my bucket list. To top this all off we went on a band road-trip (concert tour) to an international concert. We not only performed but we also won two prizes, one for the “coolest band” of the competition. But the highlight of the road-trip for me was the dynamics when going away with women. The nurturing side of the being a woman comes out. We as women are so used to giving, to be on the receiving side of this nurturing care and kindness is so comforting, and to give it, is so rewarding as it is visually and verbally appreciated. Sisterhood is described as a close relationship among women based on a shared experience this is how I can only explain. Bang-on-40 is a sisterhood, a shared experience.
