The Oxford English Dictionary defines awe as “a feeling of reverential respect mixed with fear or wonder.” This is how we felt sitting in the front row at the Spring Bull sale at the sale yards in Mooi River. And this was before the brahman bulls, notorious for their obstreperous natures, had come into the ring. We were still on the “docile” beefmaster / simmentaler / bovelder types, yet one had tried to jump over the rails around the ring and another had got its head stuck in the rails feet away from us and was snorting and cavorting before some brave big and brutish farmer types freed it.
This all brought back memories for me, two in particular. One was during the running of the bulls in Pamplona (Spain), and the other was closer to home when I got chased (or followed…) and run over (shifted out of the way …) at the RAS show grounds in Pietermaritzburg. The first occurrence was during my student days and Ferdinand cannot be given all the blame, but the other occurred during my more mature years and was purely being in the wrong place(the gang way) at the wrong time (while Ferdinand was making his way back to the stalls). Chivalry ran out of the bull ring as Ferdinand ran in, which saw the rails covered with men fleeing out of the way (including my fiancé) and me not finding a spot, running down the gang way. I do not know who was more overwhelmed, me with Ferdinand bearing down on me or Ferdinand with all the people shouting (laughing …) and hanging on the rails.
Well memories and nerves …. Time for a glass, or two, of red wine …around the fire.
