Corona Chronicles …. contd ….

Corona Chronicles ….. continued …
At this time, grab onto what is good and laugh at yourself / celebrate it (and if you have red wine left – toast to it ….) …
1. The kindness of friends ….
What a wonderful start to the day … sitting at my desk doing wages when I get a call from a friend up at the top of the valley …. He is off to town for supplies and wants to drop something off at our gate …. Wow … 12 freshly baked bread rolls … Glengarry rolls (nog all – English / afrikaans meaning to top it off / not just any but …) … what a treat .. hamburgers for lunch!!!!!

glengarry rolls
Fresh glengarry rolls – the BEST

2. Getting to know our adult child (AC) …..
Underneath all his “new” quirks, it is the same precious, caring, generous, loving child … I remind myself consistently. Like a mantra ….
Our eldest off-spring (EOS) has been living his own life in Cape Town for a year and a half and has come back to farm life with all his “Cape Town” requirements!
A new eating style … starting with iced coffee every morning (not a moer koffie English / Afrikaans for strongly brewed morning coffee with condensed milk and brandy (optional) salads … veggie bakes …. smoothies …. very selective meat and carb consumption…. growing up in the country I have always considered chicken as a vegetable and I never met a carb I did not like.
Intermittent fasting … I also try this but am not fanatical about it, I do have (plenty) off days
Total paranoia with best before dates …. If it does not have mould on it … eat it … I say
“how long has this been in the fridge?”… if it looks and smells ok … give it a go I say
3. Our middle-born OS (MOS) has finally cleared up his room …
and sifted through all his boxes …. Mom, I am a hoarder … he confessed to me ….. I did not want to spill the beans that I had know this since birth … (his not mine) … and that this was confirmed every time I went into his room for airing and cleaning before he came home from boarding school …
I have been moving the rock collection … the coin collection…. The knife collection… WWF card collection … the Rugby card collection ….. trinkets collected on his travels …. Between various boxes for years trying to tidy up
4. “New” crockery …
The OS were scratching through the kitchen cupboards and came across the “special” crockery kept for “special occasions” or “mass gatherings”….Once the boys had got over the shock that we do actually have matching plates etc they took on the “lets pressurise mom” challenge, which I finally gave in to, and updated our “every day” crockery set to the “special set” that used to sit in the back of the cupboard ….
Now every time we eat or sit down for tea, I get the comment … nice new plates mom…. these plates slap …. When did you buy the new plate mom ….
A similar outcome happened to our mug collection …
WARNING: bookclub dinners … any future dinner parties (I had planned one for 2025) …. Family gatherings … CROCKERY MAY BE CHIPPED
5. The set up of a “siyagunda” … (English / zulu for the mens barbers set up under a gazebo on the side of the road that have a selection of 10 shave style options ….. only in KwaZulu Natal)
The OS decided to give each other a cut with the hair clippers. We now have two mullet boys (business in the front and party at the back) and one with a machine clipped brush cut….no styling or scissors required and surprisingly practical
6. My eating humble pie …
I tried to run away home and my car wouldn’t start ….. I had to come back into the house and ask the HF to help me jump start it and had to ask the OS to come and give me a push (the car …. not me)…. It hasn’t been used for lots and lots of days ….

Even in these weird times … laugh at yourself …..
