Following the chameleon … in Fort Nottingham ….

Joining Roy from the Fort Nottingham conservancy for a hike on the Tony Kerr Trail out of Fort Nottingham was my “spoil yourself Thursday”.

Roy – forging the trail, pointing out hidden treasures and sharing his vast knowledge.

We followed the green chameleon up, down, and over streams, fallen trees, and Old Mans Beard; to the sounds and smells of nature and the glimpse of amazing views over the farm lands and distant Inhlozane.

Roy’s vast knowledge included (but was not limited to ..) tree and bird identification. Roy has lived in the hamlet of Fort Nottingham for 20 years and his love for nature and a pristine environment is evident in all his life activities. He was willing to share his various experiences with me from his travels, while chef-fing around the globe in his youth, to what brought him to South Africa and why he never left.

He pointed out tree species, animal scat, birds and animal markings. We went past trees and streams (dry at this time of the year) that made the photographer in me stop. It was an all around brilliant experience and one that is right on my doorstep but so unexplored ….

Unfolding views ….

Old Mans Beard – a indicator of a pristine air quality – and it is everywhere!

The busy roads of Fort Nottingham … a touch of rural France ….

Litchen – ever present on the rocks and rocks- is considered to be one of the oldest living things on the planet.

Oh yes … I also found a brilliant use for my brassiere; it was the perfect spot to hold my glasses, car keys and phone …. (being un-organized and a rather large bosomed lady!)

oh yes … not that large as I still carried my water bottle an my walking stick!
