At the base of the UNESCO World Heritage site, tucked into a valley filled with indigenous pristine forest and looking up on the central berg is a special place. A place that can only make you breath deeper and slower, Mackaya Bella.
The 3 Km’s there on the farm road was enough to get our imaginations running, crossing the Strekspruit over two low level bridges and driving through ferns and over the ridge. It felt as if we were entering a sacred and special place. And on our arrival, this was confirmed. I am glad we had confirmed the fully catered option because once we arrived at MK we certain little did not want to miss out on the view and have to go out for dinner.

We visited this special spot during a rainy spell in the Drakensberg, so the time we had was spent relaxing chatting and soaking up the magnificent views and not rock hopping and trail blazing …. a wonderful time to recharge and spend fun time with special friends. We did squeeze a little walk into the forest to a deep pool on our arrival, but after that it was a constant “peek a boo” game with the mountains slipping in and out of cloud cover and between rain showers the birds came out to catch the insects on the lawn.

Our stroll along the pathway and into the pristine forest was magical. The air was clean with a hint of citrus as we navigated our way over roots and under fallen trees and around vines, moss and ferns abound with “grandpas beard” all over the bark ….
