Where can you find 150 blue cranes just chilling in a field?… Wakkerstroom
Where can you see the African Purple Swamphen just chilling on the vlei? … Wakkerstroom
Where do you see a herdsman walking his herd down the main street to a fresh grazing pasture? … Wakkerstroom
Where can you taste a “little bit of heaven” in a beer glass, while just chilling on a hay bale?… Wakkerstroom of course !
A family get away for a birding birthday bash, converted two keen but mediocre birders and three novice birders into previously-untapped twitchers. Added to this we are now wild about Wakkerstroom.
What an amazing weekend we had.
We reached Wakkerstroom to catch the end of their Heritage Day market. With the stalls closing down around us, we caught up with the family while sitting under the shade of a gazebo, on hay bales, in the middle of the main street. Bunting flapped around us, while locals and tourists were enjoying the slow pace of the town and children could run around shopping, exploring and talking to stall owners without the ever present “stranger danger”.
