“Bad, Bad Leeroy Brown, bad’est Rooster in the whole damn farmyard…” these are Leeroys favorite words he hums, as he and struts across the farmyard.
Leeroy is a South African farm chicken (afro-chook), born and bred in the backyard farmyard of the homestead, he knows every inch of the farmyard, from the sun-drenched dust patch where the hens scratched for grubs to the shadowy corners by the pigpen where scraps sometimes mysteriously appeared. He spends his time protecting his hens from the dangers of African farm life. In the daytime it may be the birds of prey looking for an easy target, and as night falls it is the jackal and genet cate prowling for a quick snack. He is farmyard savvy, used to having to fight for what he wants, taking the fight wherever it needs to be (out of the sand bath and into the gutter), He is the OG street fighter without a street! He’d seen his share of scuffles, and he wasn’t afraid to mix it up. Just yesterday, a young cockerel had dared to eye his favorite hen, Henrietta. Leeroy had puffed out his chest, let out a fearsome squawk, and chased the upstart all the way from the sand bath, sending plumes of dust flying, right into the muddy gutter. He is proud and confidant within his leans and agile build, with his tail feathers being his radiant feature. They glisten in the African sun, changing colours from dark black, blue and green. It is these that he is the proudest of. Followed very closely by his deep red coxcomb and wattle. The slight darker markings that appear in the various light is worn as a “badge of honour” … especially in chickens, chicks dig scars …
What was the point of being a rooster if you couldn’t strut in the dust and feel the warm African sun on your feathers?”
