Happy Hoopoe …

The first thing that hits you about a hoopoe is its incredible, punk-rocker hairstyle. That fan-like crest of ochre feathers, with their bold black tips, can be raised and lowered on a whim, giving the bird a seriously dramatic look. It’s a fantastic contrast to its main body, which is also a warm ochre color, and the sharp, graphic black and white stripes on its wings. They have a long, curved beak that they use for probing the ground for insects, which is a surprisingly graceful action. Despite their striking appearance, their flight is a little eccentric and fluttering, almost like a giant butterfly. It’s a truly unique look that’s impossible to mistake.

And for some fun facts? First off, their nests have a reputation for being absolutely foul-smelling. The female and chicks secrete a disgusting, foul-smelling liquid that’s thought to deter predators. It’s a pretty effective (if gross) defense mechanism. Secondly, hoopoes are featured in many ancient texts and folklore, including being mentioned in the Quran and the Bible. This bird has a long and legendary history!

And if you hear my call before a grape harvest and wine pressing, you can guarantee a good vintage …
